Complexity Involved In Printed Circuit Board Design
Often abbreviated as pcb design bureau, a printed circuit board is used for mechanical support and to connect the electronic components with the use of tracks or signal traces. These have been etched from copper sheets and then laminated onto a non-conductive substance. It is called by several other names such as etched wiring board and printed wiring board.
There are certain alternatives to printed circuit board fabrication; point to point connection and wire wrap are the most commonly used alternatives to a PCB. They are the cheaper, faster and more reliable options when a high volume production is in process, owing to the process of automation available. The design and production standards are set by IPC organization. Almost all the electronic goods deploy the use of printed circuit board design.
A printed circuit board manufacturer would ideally use four materials of laminates, copper clad laminates, resin impregnated B-stage cloth and copper foil. If there is a requirement of any special material, then the printed circuit board fabrication process uses a different material as required for the desired output.
The manufacturing process in itself is quite complex. It requires a complex series of operations for the whole process. After the file of specifications is received, the order is worked upon. A layer of copper is applied over the entire circuit board on either one side or both sides. This makes the board a blank printed one. Now, the unwanted areas are removed through the process of photo engraving by a subtractive process.
In the next step, the circuit board is given a protective layering of lamination. The boards should have the ability to connect to each other and the small holes are drilled by the use of drilling machine so that they can be fixed flex PCB. The process is called VIAS.
